Oracle may discontinue the OpenSolaris package. In an internal circular, the company claims to be concentrated in the commercial version of Solaris, in an attempt to increase the company’s revenue with the sale of servers and other products. The report got a mailing OpenSolaris on Friday, March 14.

For next year, Oracle announced the release of Solaris 11 and later this year, the company must put on the market an issue for developers, called Express, which comes accompanied by a plan for additional support.

Oracle’s hope is to persuade companies that use the OpenSolaris to migrate to Solaris 11 Express, and later for the final release of the new distribution.

In order to explain what strategy lies behind the decision, the Oracle says “cannot do everything” and points to the limitations of manpower and time to give continuity to the whole number of processes that permeates the organization’s agenda

Intellectual property and beat the competition with the commercial package of the operating system is another concern of the company.

Oracle also announced that it will continue to contribute to the codes of the Apache and Perl. The code of Solaris, chancellor for the CDDL (Common Development and Distribution License) for open source at Oracle, will remain open.

Where is the iAds?

The mobile ad service from Apple is facing some problems due to the lateness of the advertising campaigns. According to advertising executives, the control system from Apple on creating ads that are displayed in the gadget is making the process take longer than expected. The information is from the Wall Street Journal.

The service of mobile advertising from Apple was launched on July 1. However, the progress of the process is still very complicated. Seventeen partners were announced at the launch of iAds, but only two were campaigning for July. Other partners have launched campaigns to return to class, but most are still developing ads for iAds.

The control of the creative process done by Apple is making the development of ads most laborious, and can take about 8-10 weeks for completion.

The iAds allows the use of interactive ads within the Apple platform without the user having to close the application you’re using.

The ads also offer recipe for Apple, which gets 60% of profits. The packages of advertising for the company’s gadgets are costing from $ 1 million.

In early June, Apple said several advertisers had signed with the company’s commitment to the use of iAds. According to a person familiar with the matter in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, more than 10 000 employees were enrolled in the first month. However, the process is still slow.

New Medal Of Honor is controversial

The 1st person shooter game series Medal of Honor allows the player to be a Taliban soldier in multiplayer mode, and even before its release in October, has raised controversy.

The U.S. network Fox News has presented the views of a mother whose son was killed in combat in Iraq on the new game from Electronic Arts. "Families buried their children will be seeing and playing it” said Karen Meredith on the new game Medal of Honor.

In the game, which takes the acclaimed series of first-person shooter for the scenario of modern warfare, players will be divided between U.S. troops and Taliban fighters in multiplayer mode. According to EA, “players get into the boots of these warriors and apply their techniques in a unique new enemy in the most fiery and hostile battlefield of Afghanistan.”

In an interview with Fox News, Karen says there is a difference between reviewing past conflicts, as in other titles in the series, which passed in the second world war, wars still going on where “people are dying”.

In an official statement, Electronic Arts denies the charges saying “we do this since seven years – if someone is a policeman, another has to be the thief. In multiplayer Medal of Honor, someone has to be the Taliban.”

Ethical issues related to games are nothing new, especially in games of first-person shooter.

Things are not that good for Asus

The pioneering computer maker Asustek netbooks posted a quarterly profit worse than expected and cut its forecast for sales of notebooks this year, due to the uncertain prospect of European and American markets.

Asustek said on Friday it expected sales of both laptops as netbooks, from 4.1 million units in the third quarter from the 3.9 million produced in the second quarter.

The chief financial officer of the company, David Chang, said the company’s sales should grow between 5% and 10% in the current quarter from the previous, while total sales in 2010 should reach 16 million to 17 million units below the previous target of 18 million.

“The margins were not very positive in the second quarter and this is due mainly to exchange rate issue. It seems that the demand will not be very strong in the second half,” said analyst Angela Hsiang, the KGI Securities

Sales of technology products from manufacturers to retailers generally increase in the third quarter due to demand return of classes and shopping before the Christmas season, and then tend to decrease in the fourth quarter.

Asustek, which also manufactures motherboards and own-brand mobile phones, reported net income of 3.32 billion Taiwan dollars (104 million U.S. dollars) from April to June, reversing loss a year earlier, when the company suffered losses because exchange rate variations.

Apple iPad’s Stark Competitor, The Adam Tablet To Be Introduced Soon!

Since the launch of perhaps the world's most cherished tablet device, Apple iPad in the month of April this year, there has been an incredible frenzy amongst the hardware manufacturers to bring out the one tablet, that could prove to be a stark competitor to the iPad and break Apple's monopoly over the tablet market. Now, Notion Ink, a Bangalore based company, that had showcase its very own Adam tablet device at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2010) this year, has stated that, the device is out of the experimental stages and could hit the markets as soon as by the end of this year.

The Adam tablet garnered a lot of appreciation from the tech world and was touted as one of the coolest tablet devices, that could in fact create a competition for the iPad. As per Notion Ink, the Adam tablets when introduced, will be available in four different models, that would be categorized as per the display and the wireless connectivity of the device. The company will be shipping out these tablets in both Pixel Qi or traditional LCD screens and will be equipped with either Wifi or 3G wireless connectivity. The Adam tablet could very well be priced between $399 and $498.

The world of mobile phones is now evolving at a phenomenal speed, so much so that, thee nifty devices have now become a vital tool for communication, entertainment and various other activities. As per there recent analysis from Gartner, Android has claimed the top spot in the total smartphone sales in the U.S.

Even though the Android system is considered to be infant in this stream and the fact that, it would a consistent winning streak to be called the top OS, yet the current analysis does prove to be a significant achievement for the Android OS. For the second quarter of the year 2010, Google Android powered devices reached a total sales of 4.96 million devices, leaving behind Blackberry with 4.84 million and Apple ‘s iOS for the iPhone with just 3.22 million devices. Even with this ratio, the Symbian OS, which is associated with the Finnish smartphone giant, Nokia, claimed the 1st spot with Nokia claiming a total global smartphone sales of 25.3 million, followed by Blackberry with 11.2 million, Android powered handsets claimed 10.6 million global sales and Apple iOS came fourth with 8.7 million.

Bling Design folks have the fetish to turn everyday objects into a sparkling novelty. We have earlier witnessed everything from laptops, cell phones and even Gibson Guitars being given the Swarovski treatment, but never really thought that Electric Switchplates could be next.

Well, the luxury mill at Fede came up "Jewel Switch" which is nothing but glorified crystal encrusted switch plates. This isn't a first-of-its-kind stuff for we have earlier covered such switches by a different luxury brand. The ones sold by Fede are running a limited number owing to its Swarovski accompaniments and top-notch craftsmanship.

There are four versions of this "jewel switch." The first one being Sand which sports a textured surface highlighted by crystals. Velvet style has thin and smooth lines to create an air of glamour around it. The Décor is a mix between Sand and Velvet and the last but not the least Art Series which has a blinding effect owing to its glorious shine. Given a choice I'd rather have these crystal stuck on my jewelry and not my electric switches and sockets.

Summer Solstice Installation Attracts Attention in Cleveland

Solstices are usually celebrated around the world, and each country has its own way of marking the day when the sun is at its farthest from the celestial equator. Mark Reigelman was commissioned by the Cleveland Museum of Art and Cleveland Public Art to create an outdoor installation that would mark the day.

The installation was created to accentuate the summer solstice party held by the museum every year. He went ahead and created the White Cloud, which celebrates the existence of the Universe and the solar energy which sustains life around us.

The installation consists of 100 eight-foot weather balloons, a dozen 22-foot steel poles and rope.

The idea was to let the balloons blow precariously against the hard marble walls of the museum. At night, the balloons are lit buy several colours which make the installation look so colourful, it would remind you of all the joy and colours of the world, which choose to ignore. The Summer Solstice is a very important day of celebration and this installation only throws light in an artistic manner towards this ancient festival.

A Machine Designed to Smoke Cigarettes, Really?!

Norwegian artist Kristoffer Myskja has come with a bizarre looking contraption aptly named as the Smoking machine. The design and sculpture of the machine is weird but weirdest of all is that the machine literally smokes cigarettes. The brass framework of the machine looks somewhat complicated which notably features a set of cigarettes. These cigarettes are gravity fed onto a holder which is inclined at a vertical angle.

The machine is electrically driven and the cigarette is lit from the holder subsequently. As soon as the first cigarette gets over the next one is queued and ready to be lit. An air valve is present at the corner for the passage of the smoke. The device then expels the cigarette and the ashes onto the floor making way for the succeeding one to be loaded.

Although it might just seem to be a mere art piece and an absurd mechanism at this moment, the real motive of Myskjia's distinctive design might as well be something much more crucial probably helping the addicts refrain from smoking.

Two things struck me when I read about the Park Gate in Dubai. Firstly it looked absolutely gorgeous, and secondly, it uses solar power! Yes, designer Adrain Smith and Gordon Gill believed that a building need not be hot just because it is situated in a desert. And how they managed to keep this building cool in the sweltering heat? They used solar panels. The Park Gate consists of six curving towers that have been covered by a canopy of solar powered panels.

There also are hanging gardens and reflecting pools that function as thermal sinks. The arched structure protects the building from direct rays of the sun, and makes use of the cool breeze coming from the sea for ventilation. The thermal salt water pool absorbs the heat during day and releases it in the night for cooler temperatures. Plants that do not need much watering or those that are salt-water tolerant have been planted in abundance.

All these things reduce the temperature by almost 10-15 degrees! The place boasts of a total area of 4.7million square feet and consists of offices, shops, and even a hotel. This oasis in the middle of the desert is perfect for both work and pleasure.

A “Rocking” Chair that Converts Kinetic Energy into Electric Power

I remember how in school we read about conversion of kinetic energy into electric energy. Well, designer Shawn Kim has made use of that very basic knowledge and come up with a very innovative and I must say, very interesting chair. As you would have guessed it, this rocking chair converts kinetic energy into electronic power that can be used to run some of your gadgets.

What is even more green about this chair is that it has been made by using recycled materials. Its body finishing is in stainless steel and carbon fiber that makes it look very chic. But I don't have to say that, just look at the picture. I would definitely like to have something like that in my house, even if it was just for the looks. The chair is based on the Watch Movement mechanism, and the generator and kinetic system convert the energy used to move the chair back and fro into kinetic energy.

This electricity is used to power a small light that can be used for reading, and also a 2 channel stereo speaker that can be used to listen to music. Well it definitely is one "rocking" chair.

New Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox on the way

Apparently, the season of renewal browsers began for real. On Wednesday both Google and the Mozilla Foundation released updates to their browsers. While Chrome 6 hit the market with its test version, Firefox 4 had its third beta version available.

The news, however, are not limited to the two browsers. Microsoft also announced on Thursday the release date of the first beta version of Internet Explorer 9. The browser must be released to the Internet on September 15 and will only be compatible with Windows Vista and 7.

Among the latest browser from Microsoft, the company emphasizes improvements in the JavaScript engine, besides the long-awaited support for HTML 5. Already the promise of Google’s Chrome guarantees 15% increase in speed of the browser and synchronization of settings between different computers.

According to Mozilla, the Firefox upgrade should also bring more efficiency in the execution of JavaScript, and a larger number of compatibility with the HTML 5. The new Firefox has also been adapted to devices with touch screens with Windows 7.

Net neutrality gets stronger

Hollywood forces that are increasingly facing the wireless devices as minicinemas may be excluded from the market for policing of internet traffic in the form proposed by Verizon and Google.

And companies independent of Hollywood, whose limited resources would not pay the use of “highways” of the Internet, they fear being more affected than the larger competitors, because its clips, TV shows and films that require lots of bandwidth, would be exiles in an extremely slow portion of the web.

“It will take smaller participants from the market” said Lowell Peterson, executive director of Writers Guild of America East, a group representing about four thousand writers.

Verizon and Google announced on Monday that regulators should have the power to police the Web traffic on telephone lines and cable TV, but that operators is that should control the speed of consumer access to content on devices without wire, such as smartphones and iPads.

Then came the successor, a more promising looking Internet Explorer 8, that although was able to attract a good amount of users, yet could not create the impact that could be compared to that of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. However, some time ago, Microsoft had stated that, it was working on the next generation of web browser, the Internet Explorer 9, that among other things would be fully supporting the new HTML5 web standards.

Now, Microsoft has finally announced the launch date for Internet Explorer 9 in Beta of course and the release will take place on September 15th, 2010 at a media event in San Francisco. The all new IE9 is expected to take the Internet Explorer series from its spiraling downturn and Microsoft it seems has spared no efforts in ensuring that the new release does compel the users to adopt IE9, as this latest version will be supporting some of the new and high end web technologies, including HTML5 and CSS3. Furthermore, the all new Internet Explorer 9 will also be providing hardware acceleration for rendering graphics as well as a faster JavaScript engine. The IE9 will be compatible only with Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. A volcano stadium in Mexico

The new Chivas stadium, designed by French architects Jean Marie Massaud and Daniel Pouzet, opened its doors officially last month. Located in Guadalajara, Mexico, the stadium has been designed to resemble a volcano erupting.

The building has capacity for 45 000 seats and its structure is located in the center of a “park sloping, a rise of grass that reaches the top of the stadium. When games are not happening, the site is used as a public park.

For the construction resembles more a volcano erupting, the architects have a white cover, like a cloud above the volcano.

Instead of creating a park around the stadium, were incorporated in 8500 car seats in the basement of the grassy area.

The facilities also include spaces for the practice of other sports, luxury cabins and a restaurant with panoramic view, with capacity for 200 people.

Chivas Stadium The building was part of an international partnership with HOK, which operates in the construction business and was responsible for labor, while local architects were responsible for supervision.

The stadium will still take two years to actually resemble a volcano. This will happen as the grass and the trees are growing around the building area.

The Japanese now have a way of trying to save electronic gadgets that have come in contact with water. Just take the unit in any store Yodobashi Camera in Tokyo, and put it in a Dryer Box The machine promises to return it crisp, like new.

Of course the machine does not solve the potential problems caused by contact with water the gadget, but it’s something. According to the Wired site, the equipment works like a giant hair dryer, using hot air to dry “drowning”.

If the Dryer Box can successfully dry the device and it working again, the owner must pay a fee of 1000 yen, about $ 10. If the gadget does not work, the service is on the house.

The Popular Mechanics site gives some tips on what to do with phones that were wet. The first thing to do is cut the power of the device immediately – if it has not happened yet – removing the battery, Moreover, one should resist strongly connect the device while wet.

According to the site, and many others on the Internet, simply place the device in a closed container with silica gel, or dry rice, for those who do not have silica at hand. Charlie Sorrel, Wired magazine disagrees with the use of rice, saying that if that were true, all the world’s rice would absorb moisture from the air too, which he said does not happen.

In any case, Rain Noah, writing for the site Core77, says there are two places that he never moves on its mobile: the bathroom and on the edge of a subway platform. Perhaps it is best to follow the example of Noah to avoid future problems with the gadgets.

Twitter is growing fast!

According to a survey recently released by comScore, only in June Twitter‘s website was accessed by more than 93 million users, an increase of 109% compared to last year. With this, the microblogging service earns the status of a social networking more accessible worldwide.

“Today, almost three among four global Internet users accessing social networking sites every month,” said Graham Mudd, senior vice president of comScore, noting that social networking sites have become one of the most common activities on the web in recent months .

Demographically, the largest amount of hits in the month of June came from Latin America or Asia, especially Indonesia, accounting for 20.8% of access, followed by Brazil with 20.5%, and Venezuela which took a stake of 19%. Apparently, the Venezuelans would have been influenced by the use of Twitter made by the country’s president, Hugo Chavez, who created an account on the service in April

Salvador Dali’s Hometown Cadaqués to Be Recreated in Spain

If you are an admirer of Salvador Dali, you would know that his picturesque hometown of Cadaqués in Spain is just as surreal as his paintings were. Now, the city that gave birth to a legend like him is going to be recreated in China, as a part of a massive developmental plan.

Thanks to a team of designers hired by developer China Merchants Zhangzhou, the town of Cadaques would be recreated in China, some 6,500 miles away. The recreated Cadaques would serve as a tourist destination for wealthy Chinese who might want a touch of Europe without travelling out of the country. The picturesque town would be faithfully recreated in China, where the authorities expect the city would even attract foreign tourists.

It remains to be seen how surreal this developmental project would end up to be, for it is one thing to create a surreal painting, but something else to create a surreal town of a surrealist. If you are intrigued by this project, hand on for a while for it may take more than just a few years for it to be completed. The fishing villages nearby are expected to profit from this development.

BlackBerry Given a Deadline till 31 August by Indian Government or Threatens Suspension of Service

The Indian Government has given the makers of smartphone BlackBerry a deadline till August 31, 2010 to grant access to its services or face the suspension of its services in the Indian territory.

The Indian government has come up with this proposal in the interest of the national security and to fight against terrorism. After the Mumbai Blast in Taj Mahal Hotel in late 2008 that killed 166 people, the Indian government is insistent that they are allowed to monitor the communications made via BlackBerry phones.

Other international governments like Algeria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon have followed the suit of United Arab Emirates to ban the use of the device from their country. With the growing threat of terrorism many more countries may join the club too.

The Research in Motion (RIM) has given the explanation that privacy of the communication of its users is safeguarded and no third party is allowed to read the encrypted messages. The Indian government has warned that if RIM does not grant access to encrypted data in BlackBerry messages and e-mails then the service will be blocked. More than a million users of BlackBerry in India may have to pay the price for this dispute.

Apple Inc. To Launch Apple TV as iTV With Applications & Reduced Video Resolution

One of the biggest names in the world of technology, Apple Inc. has now reportedly given a new spin to its highly anticipated Apple TV program, as according to numerous reports, the company will be renaming the entire project to 'iTV' before the official launch of the product. Furthermore, the all new iTV will come with various downloadable applications and Apple has even reduced the resolution of the video from 1080p high-definition video to 720p HD video.

The results of a long study of American humorist and musician Christian Rudder, show some trends among users of the dating site OkCupid. The study shows that the type of camera used in the pictures can make people more attractive, the use of flash can age approximately 7 years and iPhone owners have more sexual partners than owners of other brands of smartphones.

The results were published on Tuesday in OkTrends, the official blog of OkCupid, under the title “Do not be ugly by accident.”

The survey was conducted with 552 000 pictures of site users, 11.4 million grouping of opinions about how to get the ideal shot. Pairs of pictures were presented to users, asking for opinions. So it was collected information on the origins of the photos, as time of day it was taken, speed and others.

The first finding is a little obvious, but numerical results are always interesting. According to the survey, the type of camera used in the photos makes a big difference in the outcome and the attractiveness of the photographed.

In general, the more complex and full of features the camera, the better the person’s appearance.

But what draws attention is the result of the relation between the mark Smatphone and quantity of sexual partners a person. Were involved only people with 30 years of age – 9785 men and women – and the BlackBerry, iPhone and Android.

iPhone owners can have up to twice as many sexual partners of owners Androids and about 33% more than owners of BlackBerrys.

A research made by BrandWatcher showed, by means of observation of consumer attitudes on the web that Apple is currently the brand more criticism on blogs and on Twitter.

The analysis showed that the apple is the most linked to the hash tag #fail, expression originated in Twitter, but that is already all over the internet and in the mouth (or fingers) of consumers who have not had their expectations met by companies and products.

Last month, the company was mentioned 1204 times in tweets with that hashtag. Most messages referring directly to the brand in general, while others contain specific claims about their iPhones, and Macs iPads, says the website of the Times of India.

Before you think that social networks on the topic, many profiles have been turned into memorials, some were excluded by family and friends who may know the password, or were left in the air, with no updates and no visits.

However, Twitter decided to follow in the footsteps of other social networks like Facebook, and adopted a policy to deal as dead user profiles. According to Mashable, Twitter will enable relatives or friends of the deceased can go to the team a death certificate, requesting the deletion of the profile or the backup of the user’s public tweets.

Besides the certificate, Twitter will also require some information about the requester, such as their relation with the user profile in question, noting that in any way will be given the password to access the account. Who want to include a posthumous message in the profile, for example, need to apply for other methods of access to the profile, such as knowing the user’s password or access through another device that has the password saved in memory.

Women spend more time on online games than men

They are still a minority in the network, but are spending more hours connected to the web than men. According to a recent survey conducted by comScore, women now spend more time online than men, especially when access is related to communication – they spend about one third of total time online in social networks, instant messaging and sending emails, compared with only 25% of men.

Furthermore, The New York Times points out that more than overcome the men in total hours online, women also spend much of their time with online games, with preference for board games, cards or puzzles. Even more surprising is that the age group most active in online games are women over 55 years – these ladies spend more time playing than teenagers and young adults, men aged 15 to 24 years. LG developed a technology for washers and dryers that promises to facilitate and expedite the repair process of possible problems in equipment. With SmartDiagnosis system, developed to facilitate communication between technical and machine, the washer “account” to the coach what’s your problem, saving much time and labor.

Google now provides MSI packages for installation of Google Chrome browser. The evolution of one of the most cherished and widely accepted mobile operating systems, Google Android has been phenomenal. There is no stopping of the flood of news reports, when it comes to one of the most cherished gadgets in the world, the Apple iPad. Since its launch in the month of June this year, the device gained incredible levels of popularity, so much so that, Apple Inc, sold one million iPad units in just one month. Now, there are reports coming in that, Apple could very well be working on the final touches for an new iPad, that will sport a considerable smaller screen of 7 inches and will be powered by Cortex-A9 processor.

“Hackintosh” fights Apple

The legal fight between Apple and Psystar seemed to have ended in December 2009, when the manufacturer was prohibited to sell Hackintosh computers with Mac OS X, but it was only a pause. At the time, Psystar filed an appeal against the Cupertino company, which is being kept secret. Psystar also filed a lawsuit in Florida, with the same arguments as before, but targeting the Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Apple, however, will not snap to Psystar and openly criticized the company’s stock.

The manufacturer unauthorized Mac clones also said that Judge William Alsup, who accompanied the original event, exaggerated by including Mac OS X 10.6 on the Rebel EFI process. EFI is the assembler program (similar to the PC BIOS) that loads the operating system on Apple computers.

Psystar argues in his new motion that the Mac OS X 10.6 was not being marketed when the process started and want the new version of Mac OS is seen as a new product that was not originally included in the legal battle – and, therefore, is outside the judge’s decision Alsup and can be marketed by it.

In 2006 Apple decided to abandon the PowerPC platform to Intel and adopted the same standard IBM PCs. This change, with a dash of ingenuity of hackers on duty led to the modification of the operating system Mac OS X to work (illegally) on any PC with Intel processors. Many enthusiasts have begun to assemble their “hackintosh” PCs with shared and modified versions of Mac OS X, most with relative success.

Rumors suggest that Research In Motion (RIM), maker of BlackBerry smartphones, is planning to launch a tablet later this year. The alleged device was nicknamed BlackPad, a reference to the famous brand of smartphones from RIM and Apple tablet, and it is possible that the name is actually used by RIM, which has acquired a few days ago the domain blackpad.com.

According to the site Ubergizmo, the Taiwanese notebook manufacturer Quanta Computer would have been chosen to manufacture the tablet of RIM, which should work with the operating system Android, Google, and will have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, plus the ability to use a 3G connection through tethering smartphone from a BlackBerry. The distinguishing feature here is that a part of the landscape forms part of the open-space sculpture gallery hosting the artist's creations. The makers have used elite elements of Greek architecture to bring a 3 zonal sumptuous working space for the owner. It makes me wonder that only if corporate offices too could be made in such fashion, it might just bring out the best out of the employees.

Flash on iPhones now is possible

Now that unlocking iPhones is legally permitted in the United States, it appears that turned party. First, it launched the site JailbreakMe that unlocks Apple devices remotely from the site, taking advantage of a security flaw. Now, the creators of JailbreakMe released Frash, which allows iPhones, iPod Touch and iPads run applications and videos using Flash, from Adobe.

The site PC World recalls the media debate between Apple and Adobe about supporting Flash on iPhones, which culminated in the publication of the reasons Steve Jobs not to insert the Flash on their devices – among the reasons, Apple’s CEO highlighted the vulnerability Flash to external attacks, incompatibility with touch screens and the deterioration of the battery of the apparatus.

However, despite having banned the Flash devices, Apple’s Steve Jobs cannot prevent users who have unlocked their phones to install and make use of Frash, allowing execution of videos and Flash applications on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, iPad and third-generation iPod Touch.

It is unclear whether the release and installation of unauthorized software such as Apple Frash will review its policies and restrictions, but the company is keen to stress that does not recommend installing applications is not checked, and that the release of equipment, even are no longer illegal in the United States, is a violation of the license to use the device and that Apple might refuse to support devices that have been modified or possessing unauthorized applications installed, notes the site Information Week.

Skype wants US$ 100 millions

The company Skype aims to raise $ 100 million through an initial public offering (IPO in the stock market) in the United States. The order of business is to diversify and further increase revenue and user base.

In its presentation, the corporation said that most of its revenue now comes from the SkypeOut service, which the company intends to expand, allowing more users to make calls to regular phone lines and mobile devices.

In the first half of 2010, Skype has increased its net income by 25% to 406.1 million dollars, compared with 324.8 million dollars from the same period in 2009. However, the income fell from 22.5 million to $ 13,100,000.

Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in 2005 for 2.6 billion dollars. In November last year, eBay sold 70% of the company for $ 1.9 billion in cash.

A consortium of investors bought a stake of 56%, while the co-founders of Skype Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom have gained 14%. The deal puts the value of Skype on 2.75 billion.

In addition to Internet telephony, video calls and instant messaging, Skype also offers SMS, screen sharing and file transfer services.

Locaweb fails

In the early afternoon of Monday, 09/08, the company hosting services Locaweb faced failures in its system. The place left sites hosted by the company – including its own – off the air for about 20 minutes. Among the Web sites compromised by the problem is the Look Digital, which had affected its services throughout the period of difficulty of the company.

The company’s profile on Twitter you can find answers to customers published questioning the fall of pages from 12 noon today. The mechanisms provided that suffered the consequences of failure are the hosting tools, email, cloud computing, electronic commerce and business services.

The company also said in the microblog address check status of their services.

According to a representative of Locaweb, the problems are still being investigated. The press office of the company has not released a statement with official explanations.

The Locaweb is a leader in hosting in Brazil and Latin America, according to the IDC report LA 2009 in IT Services, Infrastructure Hosting Services category.

A Huge Chunk of Ice Breaks from Greenland Glacier

The researchers from the US University have reported that a giant ice of about 100 square miles has broken from the Petermann Glacier in Greenland. This glacier is located in the north western part of Greenland and is almost 620 miles south of the North Pole.

If this giant sheet of broken glacier moves further south towards the Canadian waters, it could prove to be extremely hazardous for the shipping industry. Never has the iceberg of this size calved since 1962 in the Arctic region. However, this is not news to many as cracks were noticed in the Petermann Glacier earlier too and calving was bound to take place sooner or later.

The iceberg is quite a size and Petermann Glacier has lost almost one quarter of its ice. The glacier is said to measure almost 43 miles. It is not clear if the calving of this nature was caused by global warming although scientists have claimed that the first half of 2010 to be extremely hot globally. Professor Andreas Muenchow from the Delaware University has optimistically said that the Greenland glacier has plenty of fresh water supply to keep "US public taps flowing for 120 days". Very optimistic as of now, we must say!

One of the foremost names in the field of computer hardware, Hewlett Packard (HP) has now officially announced the resignation of its CEO, Mark Hurd, as the controversies of sexual harassment by a former HP contractor, kept making things harder for Mr. Hurd. The company has appointed the current Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Cathie Lesjak as the interim CEO of HP.

As per the investigations carried out by HP in the alleged sexual harassment case, it was found that, there was no sexual misconduct on part of Mr. Hurd, but he was found to have not adhered to the company's Standards of Business Conduct. The general counsel of HP, Mike Holston stated that, during the investigation there were several monetary discrepancies discovered on part of Mark Hurd, that were allegedly used to hide facts about the nature of the close relationship with the ex-HP contractor. Reports are surfacing that, Mr. Hurd, even while being married, carried on a personal relationship with the HP contractor and tried to cover it up with bogus expense reports.

In a statement, Mark Hurd said,

"As the investigation progressed, I realized there were instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career. After a number of discussions with members of the board, I will move aside and the board will search for new leadership. This is a painful decision for me to make after five years at HP, but I believe it would be difficult for me to continue as an effective leader at HP and I believe this is the only decision the board and I could make at this time. I want to stress that this in no way reflects on the operating performance or financial integrity of HP."

Browser Privacy Modes Aren’t That Private As Advertised!

With the immense expansion of the Internet into just about every aspect of our day to day lives, the need for user privacy is more paramount now, than ever before. Sensing the overgrowing demand for more privacy, major web browsers such as the Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome etc. recently began providing users with an all new 'Private Browsing' mode built right into the browser. The idea behind this move being that, the users will be able conduct sessions, without leaving any traces of their activity on the computers. However, a team of researchers have found that, all the hype about the private browsing modes is just that, a hype, and it seldom works.

As per the results of the research, the current generation browsers aren't able to provide effective private session modes. Firefox for example consists of a 'custom handler protocol' embedded inside the construct, due to which the URLs visited by the users in the privacy mode are still visible after exiting the mode. Browsers such as IE, Apple Safari, Firefox etc. are known to use the SSL client certificates for security purposes, that are expected to keep the user privacy maintained, however, it has been found that, SSL client public/private key pair generated during the private session can still be retained by the browser, thereby nullifying the entire concept of the Private Browsing.

According to the researchers,

"Browser add-ons (extensions and plug-ins) pose a privacy risk to private browsing because they can persist state to disk about a user’s behavior in private mode. The developers of these add-ons may not have considered private browsing mode while designing their software and their source code is not subject to the same rigorous scrutiny that browsers are subjected to."

Systems more computerized in speech recognition can understand what a human says up to 98% of the time. Yet people still complain about the automated programs help by telephone. To make these solutions less frustrating to use, would be essential to give them a better understanding of language and make them more interactive.

For now, the customer service departments of most large organizations offers automated systems for Help. A user connects to the case number and a computer voice asks a series of questions. Most of these systems are based frameworks that, in general, are like decision trees.

The systems are actually a combination of various technologies. One is voice recognition, or the ability to understand a computer, or to successfully translate the text, what the person is saying.

Another technology is the natural language processing (NLP). It tries to convert the spoken message or a command that the computer can perform, or can be repeated in a concise manner to a human operator.

Barclays Cycle Hire is here to save the skies of London from vicious smoke and pollution. It is the name of the new bicycle rental system introduced to make the environment pollution free and it got its name from the famous bank which also happens to be its corporate sponsor. Word has it that Barclays had to shell out £25M to lend its name.

6000 bicycles have been built so far at Devinci Cycles in Batgotville Quebec and their quality is far better than the ones churned out by the rest of the companies in U.K. As there is always a threat posed by malicious vandals, these bicycles have been made extremely sturdy to withstand any possible damage. Each bicycle weighs around 23 kgs and has many added features to suit its users.

The cycles also have a light which keeps working for 2 minutes after one stops pedaling and their mudguards are strong and durable to combat the splash caused in the rains. The biggest drawback so far is the absence of locks, which can make it an easy prey to felony, so you need to be very careful with these cycles!

Ukrainian Man Slices his Grandmother Alive and Eats Her Body Parts

A 26 year old Ukrainian man is arrested as a suspect for mutilating his grandmother and eating her body parts while she was still alive.

The 26 year old computer programmer, Sergei Zhmaryov allegedly cut his granny's eyes with a broken glass and ate it. When the 60 year old woman tried to call out for help, he sliced her tongue followed by her lips and ears. The old woman eventually bled to death and suffered serious wounds in her body. The police suspect that this could be a "ritualistic killing". Sergei Zhmaryov was raised by his grandmother since his childhood after his parents were separated.

Investigation on this gory murder is still going on and no further information was given by the local police. Sergei Zhmaryov is the prime suspect for the murder though. Sergei Zhmaryov has admitted to have indulged in cannabis before his grandmother was attacked. He is also known for his religious fanaticism amongst his neighbors and was seen conducting the last rites for his dead grandmother dressed only in his underpants, holding a cross and chanting prayers. If he is found guilty, he can serve a jail term of up to 20 years for murder charges.

Kaka Down for Almost 4 Months with Knee Injury

Brazilian football player Kaka has undergone a knee surgery which could easily cost him another three to four months for recovery. The Real Madrid player had a thirty minutes arthroscopic surgery in Antwerp this Thursday morning.

Kaka has had couple of injuries last year too, recovering just in time to make it to the FIFA World Cup this year in South Africa. Real Madrid's new coach Jose Mourinho was pretty eased up about Kaka's injury and supported that he should have 100 percent recovery before he joins the training. He also added that Brazilian Kaka was very popular amongst his team mates and was a very good player too. Jose Mourinho also said in the news conference held in San Francisco that "it won't be a drama" if Kaka was to be missing from the team during his recovery as there were other players.

Real Madrid won by 3-2 in a friendly match against Club America. Kaka, 28, is a midfielder for the Real Madrid team coached by the Portuguese Jose Mourinho. He has scored 8 goals during 25 league appearances last season. Kaka joined the Real Madrid team in 2009 for a whooping fee of sixty five million euros.

UN Report: 4 Million Affected Due to Pakistan Floods.

According to the latest UN reports, more than 4 million people have been affected by the floods in Pakistan. The death casualties have gone up to 1600.

Pakistan occupied Punjab and Sindh province have been affected the worst. The floods in the north western part of the country are much more under control. The disaster has left millions of people stranded in the water. Water borne diseases and infections have broken out as well. Many villagers were seen in neck deep water carrying their belongings on the head. The torrential rain has washed away their homes, crops, transportations and even villages altogether. In Punjab alone, 1300 villages has been flooded and has destroyed more than 25,000 homes. Only tree tops were visible in some areas, as reported by the disaster relief people.

Weather experts have said that this flood is the worst since 1929. More downpours are expected in the next 24 hours. People are furious for not getting help from the government or the army. However, the Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has claimed that rescue efforts are on and 100,000 people has already been rescued so far. UN has also sent a special envoy to Pakistan to aid the victims of this disaster.

Tree House: Brainstorming Architecture by Mount Fuji Architects Studio

Outlandish architecture has always raised a few eyebrows, just like this one. When architects from Mount Fuji Architects Studio decided to come up with something that is space efficient and unconventional, they drew inspiration from the ancient tree houses. Cartesian co-ordinate system has been thoroughly exploited in the construction of this house.

They call it the ‘tree house’ and it is located in northern Tokyo in a very calm residential area. It has been made by a series of wood arches pivoted at a thick stem in circular fashion, the wooden arches swirl like a single stage of helix. There is a separation of 1.7 metre between the start and the end of the ceiling and this vertical gap ushers the light in and also provides an opening to the roof terrace.

The inconsistent levels of light inside the house (owing to the entrance to the roof terrace) decide the rooms in its vast interior, like the darker side of the hall can be used a bedroom and the brighter side can be used as a study. No doubt, it is a completely non eco-friendly structure, but if the concept is replaced with concrete, then it could be considered a landmark architecture!

Google invests on smartphones

Approximately 200 000 smartphones and other devices based on the Google Android operating system are being sold each day, said Eric Schmidt, chief executive, on Wednesday, emphasizing the strong challenge this poses for rivals Apple iPhone.

The world’s leading search engine is looking for new revenue opportunities, as growth slows in its core activities of Internet and new technologies such as smart phones and social networking services transform the way consumers gain access to Web

Schmidt expects the revenue from advertising related to searches on mobile phones in the future will exceed the revenue that Google currently generates through searches on personal computers, but did not specify a date.

Schmidt said that Google’s focus now was to integrate social networking features to their products online, but declined to comment on information that is building a new service to compete with Facebook – the world’s largest online social networks – and creating partnerships with social gaming companies like Zynga.

Analysts believe that games can be a way for Google to join the arena of social networks as the Internet giant has to overcome a series of unsuccessful initiatives that left on the sidelines of this thriving market.

Google Wave Gone with the Wave?

Google's most talk about Google Wave, new age communication tool that was buzzing the online space in the late 2009 may finally rest in peace.

Google hasn't had much luck on the social front. First the Google Wave and then the Google Buzz, both haven't been much of a success. Google has planned to keep Google Wave code as an open source. No one would have ever guessed that Google Wave invites that was being sold for $ 70 on eBay would suffer such a short success. It didn't amuse the users much even after having an easy access to Wave which initially started as an 'invite only' communication tool.

Perhaps, the users would have welcomed the Google Wave more if had it been integrated with Gmail. Having said that, we must not forget that Google has faced disappointment with the launch of Google Buzz too although it is a part of Gmail. Motorola and Verizon may launch a tablet

After the iPad, Apple, several companies decided to produce its own tablet, and it seems that Motorola will not stay out of ‘fashion’. In partnership with Verizon, the company plans to launch later this year a tablet specifically for the broadcasting of cable TV service from Verizon.

According to The Wall Street Journal Web site, the unit should have a 10-inch screen and work with the Android operating system from Google. And, unlike the IPAD, the future of tablet Motorola and Verizon support Flash, Adobe‘s software behind nearly 90% of Web videos.

Though its main vocation is to become a portable TV, the unit will also enable the sharing Wi-Fi Internet connection and will have two cameras, a back, to take pictures, and another front, for use in video conferences, explains Reuters site.

The site CNET also notes that the device could be thinner and lighter than IPAD and should reach U.S. stores in time for Christmas shopping. Questioned, both Motorola and Verizon or Google declined to comment on the matter.

Intel: chip war is over

Intel agreed to stop adopting anticompetitive practices against rivals, settling old accusations of abuse of market dominance, the agency said U.S. trade, Federal Trade Commission said Wednesday.

The company, which produces 80 percent of all microprocessors in the world, has also agreed to give manufacturers of complementary products, such as graphics processors, access to its chips for the next six years.

In turn, Intel, which denies having acted improperly, it does not believe that the agreement has a material effect on its financial results.

Intel has been under fire from rival makers of chips for years because of its aggressive pricing policies and sales.

Under pressure from arch-rival AMD and the graphics processor manufacturer Nvidia, the FTC accused Intel in December of illegally using its market dominance to stifle competition.

Now Intel is prevented from offering benefits to computer makers in exchange for a commitment to use only the company as a supplier of chips. The company is also obliged to alter intellectual property agreements with AMD, Nvidia and Via.

Authorities in South Korea and Japan have also taken action against Intel.

Stanford Engineers Invent New PETE Process to Tap Solar Power More Efficiently

In the times of climate change and depleting natural resources much hope is pinned on use of alternate renewable sources of energy like solar energy or Wind Energy but the problem with alternative sources of power is that are yet to become affordable and efficient. All that may change if the new method and technology of energy conversion invented by Stanford Engineers to tap solar power becomes a reality.

According to the report published in latest Nature Materials Journal some researchers and engineers have found new method to transform both light and heat energy from the sun into electricity using PETE process. PETE is basically 'Photon Enhanced Thermionic Emission Process' which is totally new technology which will make solar energy easy to harness and efficient and cheap.

Photovoltaic cells and solar panels have been the standard method to convert solar energy into electricity but the main drawbacks of this method is it is not efficient and affordable. But researchers and engineers of Stanford University have claimed that PETE process will change all that and solar energy will become cheap enough to compete with oil. This is great news indeed for Sun will shine forever on Earth!

Architecture Takes An Unusual Lead In The Form Of Embedded Buildings

The world of architecture as we knew it has come a long way from simple buildings with elevators, to some of the most innovative and highly unusual designs, that have left us wanting even more. Such is the case with a recent project completed by Toronto-based architects Maier Yagod and Jon Reed for the Cleveland Public Library, have designed an all new public bench system, that gives the feeling of a house being embedded in the sidewalk.

This incredible project called, 'Watership Down' entails the creation of five house like benches that have been designed and created in a manner, that they portray themselves to be embedded houses in the Eastman Garden. These embedded houses when seen from various angles, do indeed seem like, jutting out of the ground, with their roofs being the sole part above the ground, where passersby can sit and relax on. This unusual design has already come under somewhat of a mild criticism, where it is being compared to the post modern themes for a children's playground. However, the idea and vision itself is remarkably unique and for some, it might evoke a more vivid imagination.

Presenting An All New Kitchen Concept, That Is Not Only High-End But Mobile As Well

When designer Darren Morgan of Glenvale Kitchens was approached by a kitchen retail client, little did he know, that his work would become an instant hit and be popularized to extent of an architectural marvel. As per the brief give to Darren, the client wished to have kitchen concept designed around luxury as well as usefulness, a kitchen that he could showcase at his stall on a trade show, and one that he could take to the high end kitchen market and give competition to some of already established German and Italian manufacturers.

Another stipulation was to design the kitchen in a manner, wherein the entire concept could be dismantled, taken to the trade show and assembled again, after which the kitchen would go under the same treatment, to be transported 50 miles to the client's showroom, where it would be reassembled. To accomplish this difficult feat, Darren decided to narrow down the concept to five basic zones, which were consumables; non-consumables; cleaning; preparation; and cooking. The drawers of the kitchen cabinet were made entirely from custom laminated mirror and have been given Servo-Drive electric opening support system in the wall units. This incredible kitchen concept also comes with a 3 meter aquarium, that holds about 750 liters of water. The aquarium itself was specifically fabricated in Germany and the architecture of the aquarium was custom designed by a French artist.

According to Darren Morgan,

"I wanted this kitchen to literally come alive within the architecture surrounding it while still having the ability to transform into a stunning backdrop to any social occasion. Allowing the kitchen to change from a standby to an in-use position gives the user flexibility to morph their kitchen into a restaurant, a coffee shop or a nightclub, whatever feels appropriate. Viewing this kitchen at different times of the day can allow different elements of the design shine through."

BlackBerry is read to compete with iPhone

Research In Motion unveiled Tuesday a new version of BlackBerry, which counts for the first time, with touch screen and slide-out keyboard, reinforcing the struggle against the iPhone by Apple‘s smartphone market.

The BlackBerry Torch arrives on the shelves in the U.S. on August 12 for $ 199.99, including a two-year contract with carrier AT & T. The unit is also equipped with a new operating system and an even faster and easier to use, according to RIM.

Analysts said new functions more attractive to the individual user can help the BlackBerry to resume their position in competition with the iPhone and other smartphones that use operating system Android, Google, as the Droid, Motorola.

Nevertheless, the assessment of experts is that the Torch is not a really significant step forward compared to rival devices.

The Torch users can send messages with the touch screen or keyboard slider. The device has a 5 megapixel camera with flash and GPS satellite positioning.

The new system incorporates six BlackBerry access to social networks like Facebook and Twitter on the instant messaging service, RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger.

Meet Telenoid R1: The First Portable Android Robot

The world of robotics in the recent years has seen an exponential growth in terms of innovation and development, as scientists and researchers work to bridge the gap between human and machine interaction. Now, Osaka University and Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) have joined hands and developed an all new android robot called, Telenoid R1. This one of a kind android has been designed to provide more of a personal tele-presence to the interaction.

Both these institutions had been working on personalized androids, such as the Geminoid HI-1 and Geminoid F, that were given the appearances of regular human beings and the new Telenoid R1 has been designed and developed to mimic the appearance as well as transfer the presence of human beings. This all new android is created in both male and female forms and the physical appearance of the droid can be changed to young and old and vice versa. The Telenoid R1 provides the users with the feeling of interacting with an actual human being and the droid has been given soft texture for more human appearance and feel.

The Telenois R! measures 80cm (31″) in height and carries a weight of 5 kgs, along with several elementary motor functions such as eye motion, opening of the mouth, and can even wiggle its head in all directions. The entire project was spearheaded by Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro and the researchers at ATR, along with Eager Co. Ltd. The Telenoid R1 will be available for commercial sale with a price tag of $35,000.

The hit “I Gotta Feeling” from the pop group Black Eyed Peas, the biggest selling song on iTunes of all time, now also became the first song to be legally downloaded more than 6 million times. The record was confirmed by the information system Nielsen SoundScan, which raises the sales data for Billboard magazine.

The song was released on the album The END in June 2009 but has already passed – a lot – the downloads of some songs available on iTunes (and other digital download services) for years.

For the group’s leader, singer Will.i.am, this moment is about more than just the song. For the group’s career, which began in 1998, remains “healthy and vibrant” and reach record highs as the 6 million downloads, is quite significant, “he said in a telephone interview to news agency Associated Press.

Google Android Outsells Apple iPhone Sales In The U.S.

Since the onset of the Google Android operating system platform for mobile devices, many had speculated the rise of this new OS, so much so that, it was predicted to outgun nearly all existing mobile operating systems. And that's exactly what has happened, as Android powered devices have taken a lead ahead of the highly prestigious Apple iPhone.

For the first time in recent history the sales of the Google Nexus One soared, amounting to 27% of total handset sales in the U.S as per the Nielsen Company and this surge in the handset sales broke past the Apple monopoly of 23% market share. The success of Android powered handsets isn't only confined to the United States alone, as according to the technology analysis firm, Canalys, the Android phenomenon took the world by storm with an astounding 886% increase in handsets sales against the quarter from last year.

Even though Google Android surfaced in the market about two years ago, yet it is still relatively new when it comes to various established and long serving mobile operating systems, such as iOS 4, Blackberry, Symbian etc. and the popularity of Android has brought several handset manufacturers back into the game. RIM agrees with the governments of the Middle East

Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, is willing to block pornographic sites and allow government spies have access to communications from its users, newspapers reported, after a surprise ban on its core services in the Gulf.

The coveted secret of the BlackBerry has attracted increasing attention since Sunday, when the United Arab Emirates announced plans to block the e-mail, instant messaging and web access from the BlackBerry October 11.

As the UAE, the government of India has been pushing RIM for reasons of national security and the company may allow Indian security officials to monitor the BlackBerry service, according to the Economic Times newspaper.

RIM also “initially approved” blocking about 3000 pornographic websites, at the request of the Ministry of Communications Kuwait, the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida.

Kuwait also has security concerns, according to the publication, which said the country’s government was working with RIM and other telecommunications companies “that legal controls on the one hand, ensure national security and, secondly, the rights citizens regarding the use of appliances.”

Unlike rivals such as Nokia and Apple, RIM controls their phone networks, which transmit encrypted messages through centers in Canada and the UK.
